Just checked this cg out, have not stayed here yet!!

My family checked out Dixon's campground on our way home this past week from camping in Wells at Ocean View Campground. We were desparate to find a better place to stay next year. Not only better but much cleaner. The staff at Dixon's was extremely friendly. They were more than happy to have our family take a walk around the campground. They provided us with a map and outline some of their favorite sites. The bathrooms and showers were very clean. Sites were also clean and nicely spaced out. Some wooded and grassy areas too. Our family cannot wait to reserve a site for next year.

Functional and pretty; but the bathrooms could use a complete redo.

My wife and I have been staying here for at least five years; during the summer we spend a few days on the beach and Dixon's is our home base. We like car camping, not totally roughing it, although we wouldn't be caught dead in an RV or RV-centric campground. We enjoy the fact that we can really relax in a fairly natural setting with people who are generally considerate of the fact that this is a campground where one goes to relax in quiet, not in, well, riot. It's close enough to bike to the beach, but not to walk. Next time, we'll finally try the sea kayaking tours. Overall, a very pleasant experience.

Now for some constructive criticism. Our one complaint is the bathrooms. First, there are not enough. When we went most recently there was a large family (who took up several sites). They sent their kids to do the dishes in the sinks, and we had to wait to brush our teeth, etc., for quite some time. This is a typical problem. Often, one waits 20 minutes or so for a shower, which are coin-operated.

The bathrooms are not dirty, but they're not immaculate, either. They should put in shelves or more hooks for people who need to change or don't want to let their bag of toiletries touch the floor. The sinks are sort of under an awning on either side of the small bathroom/shower/sink huts, and are stainless steel basins mounted in plywood. Bugs tend to crawl in and around, and the plywood gets wet, and pools up because of surface irregularities that would not happen with formica, cement, whatever.

I know we're camping and so should have a different set of expectations than we would in a 5-star hotel. But I think larger, cleaner bathrooms (a la those at one of our favorite campgrounds, Megunticook, in mid-coast Rockland) that respond to the number and type of campers who stay there would make staying there that much more of a relaxing and pleasant experience.

I do not recommend this campground at all to anyone. I found that their only concern was making money. I should have known upon my arrival that this was a campground that only wanted my money and not my business again.
The sites where crowded together to maximize their profits, 2 bathrooms for every 15 to 20 sites, 2 showers, and two sinks. A walkthrough showeed me that everyone had that problem not just myself. If you wanted firewood it was costing around $6.00 a small bundle and when I went to go to use my credit card ( no sign saying min. amount) they refused to sell me items.
It was the most unfriendly campground that I have ever stayed at - I would sya for the amount of money that you arespending go elsewhere - it isn't worth your time or energy.

Sites not laid out well

Date:

August 7, 2007

Spent 1 night at Dixons. Although the grounds are very well kept, the sites are small and on top of each other. I could look down into the tent below me and the camper above me had a nice view of us inside our camper. There is plenty of room to spread out the camp sites but they chose to bunch them together for some reason in the woods and also along the grassy area.

The outhouses consisted of a flush toilet only. There were two toilets for the about 15 - 20 sites. Not 2 for women and 2 for men. I mean 2 for both. Had to wait a bit to use them. There was no hand soap dispensers anywhere. There were plenty of sinks, on the outside of the bath house that were very tall. Not sure how anyone under 5 feet would be able to reach them. Won’t go back.

DO NOT STAY AT DIXON'S "COASTAL" Campground. Not only is it NOT on the coast as most would think. It's off a very busy highway road between the Beautiful YORKS, and Ocgonquit. The place is the most uncaring, and money hungry vultures I have ever came across. After driving 5 hours to get there, and being VERY disappointed on the location, With 9 stiches in my leg, they did not give a shit, and wanted to put me near a dumpster, even though I sent in a deposit, prior to my arrival. DO NOT STAY AT DIXON"S "NON_COASTAL" Campground. VERY unsatisfied. So I drove to YORK BEACH, and paid 4 dollars more to have a VERY BEAUTIFUL camping spot at LIBBY's OCEANSIDE CAMPGROUND. That is a highly recommended vacation spot for all.
