The Mount Desert Campground was conceived and created by Marie and Arnold Allen in 1958. The Allen’s goal was to maintain a quiet, clean, tenting campground where families could come to relax, enjoy the natural beauty, and make memories. For the next 25 years, the Allens enjoyed a very loyal following of campers who returned here year after year. In early 1984, the Allens sold the campground to one of those long time campers of almost 20 years, the Craigheads. Now, almost 20 years later, we Craigheads strive to maintainthe very best campground we can- so the children of those long time campers from years past can, in turn, make new memories with their kids. We do not offer lots of frills and gimmicks but we do provide the quietest campground with the cleanest, most up to date facilities anywhere. We look forward to welcoming you to the Mount Desert Campground and we will do our utmost to make your stay a pleasant one.

We stayed end of June 2013. We originally had a site in the E section that had a lot of mosquitoes. We took a walk to the dock and noticed that there were hardly any mosquitoes at all and a nice breeze. We went to the registration desk and asked if we could switch sites. We were staying from a Saturday to Wednesday, we figured people would be leaving on Sunday. The woman at first seemed a little hesitant but then another girl said there was a cancellation for the week so we switched sites to the C section, right on Sommes Sound. The sites are more closer together nearer the water, but well worth it, no bugs! We also had a view of the floating docks so we could see our daughter crabbing-which kept her very busy. You can buy crabbing nets at there little gathering place building. It was more expensive to be near the water, but well worth it-still cheaper than some hotel or cottage. The other campers were very friendly and the latest I heard noise was 10 pm. We saw no trash and no one walking around with beers. The bathroom near our section was usually crowded at night with people taking showers, so I went to the brand new bathroom in the E section. We technically stayed at the very beginning of their "high" season. There were not any activities other than crabbing and enjoying the view. We were there to see Acadia so we were out most of the day. We are thinking about going back in the fall. Don't know about the other bad reviews, you're camping, not staying at some swanky hotel in Bar Harbor.

loud buggy and dirty

Trash cans have trash overflowing in them.... could have the most mosquitoes of any campground I have stayed at. Very very loud at night between music, people screaming/talking loud, to car alarms always going off. It would have been quieter camping in down town New York city. Mount Desert Campground is not a good place.

Mount Desert Campground has misleading website

Date:

Mount Desert Campground is very pricey for what you get. Bathrooms were out of toilet paper along with being overall dirty with beer cans. Everyone looks miserable working there. You hear the stories about people going on vacation after viewing the website of a nice hotel or vacation spot and this was no different. Their website is very misleading and makes it seem as if this is a great family run business that cares about its customers and ensuring that families are enjoying themselves. Agree with the other comments about being loud at night. Don't believe the Mount Desert Campground website.

For anyone that wants to stay here please read this review. The tents are way to close to each other. The staff is not friendly. The camp ground is very loud throughout the whole night with cars driving through the camp ground all hours to the campers that have no respect for being quite at night. Very buggy because of the water near by. The trash dumpers were not empty so the place smelled like a dump. They also nickel and dime you at there general store. Very poorly run camp ground.

Rude staff and tents on top of each other

Date:

It started off with someone at our campsite when we arrived there. Ok, no biggie but had to drive all the way back to the front office to get it resolved. It took close to an hour to get it resolved. The staff (believe it was one of the Craighead owners ) seem to care less to get it resolved in a timely manner. Kind of gave me an attitude as why I was not happy. They also made a point to remind me that we needed to leave by 11am. Thought it would have been nice to allow us to stay an extra hour since we wasted an hour resolving my site location issue. This person should have taken a class on customer service. They obviously just care about getting their money and getting people in and out as quickly as possible. My wife and I could not believe how close the tents were together once we got settled in. They are on top of each other. Our camp site was pretty close to the road so had to deal with all the dust from the cars. Make sure you don't get a site near the road. Also, thought this campground was very pricey for what you get. The website makes you think that this place is amazing. Lastly, do not buy the wood here. They overcharge you. There is a place on 233 that some guy sells wood for a lot cheaper. They like to get every last cent from you here.

Not happy here

Date:

This will be our first and last stay. I must say we were really disappointed with the stay. After reading some positive reviews on other sites my family and I was very excited to come here. I honestly question the authenticity of some of those review saying how nice this place is. Lets get something straight. Its not a great campsite. We have gone camping all throughout New England and for some reason this was just not a good experience. Its loud at night. I don't think people realize how far their voices carry. Maybe it was where we were staying at (A section) but there were also sketchy people that were near us that honestly did not make us feel safe. We ended up locking all of our stuff in the car. Granted, this could happen at anyplace I guess. Cars do travel on the road throughout the night. You also have people walking around with beers throughout the whole day. Thats not ok with a family or a place that makes this campground seem "family friendly". The bathrooms had children playing around in them and they treated them as a playground. The hot water took 3 mins to get hot in the shower and when you are paying for showers (hot water) that got old and expensive. Very disappointed stay.

Stay Away

Date:

August 13, 2012

Would stay away from this campground. First, the campsite is loud at night. Maybe it was where we were staying but between the music and spring break atmosphere it was loud. For example, during all 3 mights there was two campsites next to us that was loud with people yelling and drinking. Granted they were having fun and I did not feel threaten but if you are trying to sleep, it gets old. The last night I did ask them to please quite down and they did. Maybe, I should have done that the first night however I did not want a confrontation at the start of my stay. I have heard mixed things about the owners. I dont think they are open to constructive criticism. I made a comment about the price of wood to someone there (granted not sure who it was) and I basically was laughed at. How about you just take my feedback. Not saying you have to agree with it but at least listen to me. The bathrooms were clean however one morning we saw people washing their dishes in the sinks which is just gross. Then there was food that was left in it. Think its pricey for what you get. I have stayed at better campsites.

Not a good stay. First the front desk staff is not that friendly or helpful. The lady that was working the desk tried her best but they should have more than one person working at the desk. She was also rude. Had to wait 20 mins to get checked in. Was there for 2 nights and it was very loud around the campsite. They do not enforce quite hours. If that was the case it would not have been that loud. The people next to us on the last day left all of their trash (at their campsite) and we ended up cleaning up after them because we did not want the trash to go everywhere. No cell coverage at all! I mention this becaise the people next to us were smoking and I wanted to call the office but that did not happen because no cell coverage. I understand you are camping but come on. From a safety point of view it is an issue. The cars do drive fast on the road and if you have young children I would ask for a campsite away from the road. Almost saw a child get hit. There is also a lot of drinking that goes on here as well. The view is good but thats all you get here. Overrated campsite!

To give you and idea of how close the sites are, there are several site #s with a "+", meaning they squeezed one in between two existing sites. You'll be lucky to have 25' in between, more likely about 10'. My personal preference is to have a little space so I'm not "required" to interact with my neighbors if I don't want to. That's not an option at this place. Campgound was completely empty when we were up there, mostly due to weather is my guess. Yet when we said we were thinking of getting a hotel room they told us we still needed to be off the site by 11. That made our decision for us. There are plenty of other options on the island we'll be checking out besides this campground.

this was by far the best private campground i have ever been to, and i camp alot. scenery would just put you in aww. bathrooms were spotless, the staff was very friendly and helpful. i researched alot of campgrounds over the internet before i made the 12 hour trek up to maine, while we were up there we drove through some of the other ones i researched and mount desert blew them out of the water. it is right on the middle of all of the attractions, the sites were spacious and quiet, even the other campers were very friendly, met alot of nice people. i highly recommend this campground, i don't think you will be disappointed. my only complaint would be that wal mart was a little bit of a drive for the last minute things we needed, and if you go here, be sure to go to the great maine lumberjack show. when i come up here again this is definately where i would be staying
