VERY RUN DOWN

Date:

July 18, 2011

When compared in quality to a NFS campground (Blackwoods in Acadia NP, for example), Hermit Island Campground falls well short. The facility is very run down and its clear that the owners, which have owned and operated HIC since it opened more than 50 years ago, have done little to improve the facility beyond fixing something when it breaks. Our heart sank when we drove into Hermit Island and were greeted 30 foot wide pot hole (a small pond, really) in the middle of the entry road. From that point on, all aspects of the facility were a disappointment. While immensely popular with a large and loyal fan base, it seems that HIC is relying upon generations of fond memories from summers past rather than admit that the place, while scenically beautiful, is pretty run down. Too bad; the beaches are very nice.

Ocean camping at its best with beaches, hiking, biking, boating, and much more!!!

Hermit Island is the best place for people who are looking to camp right on the ocean. There is plenty of campsites, which are set in the dunes by the beaches, on the buffs with ocean views, or in the peaceful forest. The island has eight beaches for swimming, plus biking, boating, fishing, and more. The facilities are basic yet always kept clean. And when you can fall asleep after a lobster dinner by the campfire to the soft luull of the ocean, you know you have had a great vacation!!! Maine camping at its best

Our favorite campground. Spacious sites for tents, pop-ups or truck campers. No hook-ups means it's pretty quiet. Hiking trails, biking on winding camp roads, several beaches, blueberries and wildlife. Bathrooms can get a little yucky by days end but it's no big deal. If you need lots of planned activities and amenities, go somewhere else.
