great place for family fun

Date:

September 13, 2011

My family went to lake la donna this summer for their treasure hunt weekend. There lake is small, but had an awesome ropeswing going into it. The lifeguard talked to me, and let me know that it was under new ownership, and that a lot of new things were coming in the future. The bathrooms were just redone, and were in cleaned frequently all weekend long, and the lodge was huge with cathedral ceilings; however, a little pricey on the food. The lifeguard told me that they are adding all types of new toys in the lake, and maybe even a zip line! They had a digital scavenger hunt, and a sandcastle competition during the day and handed out prizes to the kids. That night they had their treasure hunt, which was a ton of fun even though we lost! They gave out clues around the campground, which lead you to the next clue, and eventually to the treasure. They gave out two prizes for the yearly campers, and the weekend campers, and the winners for the weekenders got a free night of camping! (not sure what the yearly people got). The staff was friendly, and a lot of fun. The train was definitely the only downfall, but the rope swing, and activities for the kids is what is making us come back, and even thinking about becoming seasonal. If you have kids, and like to participate in the activities Lake La Donna is the place to be. Also, a lot to do around the area, and this another reason why my wife and I will be taking our vacation at lake la donna! They have a facebook, and I would suggest checking that out, and making your decision that way considering it is much more current than this website.

GREAT NEW Cabins, bathrooms, beach toys

Date:

February 15, 2011

These new owners are doing a GREAT job!! The cabins are all new along with the bathrooms. They are building a NEW lodge that is HUGE. Great food and prices when we were there. Read a couple old reviews for this place and I say GO BACK, some people you cant please, but every one we have talked to said huge changes and great owners. We have camped here for a couple years and last year was the best, the weekend ativities, were like being at a resort. Yes there is a train, but you get used to it, my kids slept right threw it!! (They were too tired from all the fun). Bad thing is our weekend for 2011 is already booked up, but check out thier web site for the new schedule of events!! GREAT FAMILY PLACE!!

Not Family Friendly, a lot of drinking, cursing, loud music all night. No security, right next to a train track.Train goes by at least 6 times a night. Horrible!!

This is not a family friendly campground. Everyone is drinking and cursing constantly. We had a group of bikers next to us blasting thrash metal music all day/night. We nicely asked them to turn down the music a little. After that we were harassed the entire time. We have three small children and were concerned for their safety. The camp owner and staff would do nothing about the problem. The owner wouldn't even speak to us about it and the staff blew us off completely. Did I mention the profanity we had to listen to the entire time we were there? Even the lifeguards at the beach used profanity infront of the children without a second thought. I would not recomend this place to anyone with children or morals.

Wow, what a great campground! I have been there a few years ago and things have improved. The bathrooms and cabins have all been redone and the staff is very friendly. We had a great time at the beach and the entertainment was wonderful and kid friendly. Overall, I would camp at Lake Ladonna and would recommend it to family and friends.

New Ownership!! 2010

Date:

This campground is under new ownership!! This campground is going under serious renovations!!! The bathrooms (that were completely disgusting in the past) are completely gutted & renovated. The cabins are also completely gutted. If you have been disapointed in the past, I urge you to take another look at this campground. The new owner took over this park about a month ago, and he is doing a phenomenal job!

Disgusting and Dirty

Date:

June 29, 2009

The campground was very dirty and trashy. There is only 1 bathhouse for the entire campground, and the stall doors do not even close, let alone lock for the toilets. Its very dirty and gross inside the bathrooms, and the bathroom sinks barely work, if it all. You are lucky to get a small stream of HOT water to wash your hands with. The floor is slimey and they appear to have unshielded electric wires running right above the showers! The showers barely work, and the floor is disgusting and unsanitary.

The "Lodge" was disgusting, small and unsanitary. They were charging $3 for a small little slushie, $3.00 for an order of plain fries, and $4 for a cheeseburger. In their "store" all the products were from Aldi's or Dollar Tree and were marked up 200-300%- ie. the $1 bag of Aldi brand marshmellows were for sale for $3. And, some of the items even had old Aldi labels on them, so lord only knows how long they have been sitting there on the shelf. They had noodles and rafts from Dollar Tree starting at $2 each. The game room was small, dirty and very dimly lit. The breakfast buffet looked equally gross. The inside of the lodge was also covered in blue tarps, and looked extremely trashy.

Beach is small and very green and dirty. The waterslide is really a rusty old playground slide they put in the water. Small and unsanitary- it looks like they dump sewage in the "lake". Calling this place a "lake" was a gross overstatement. Retainment ponds look both larger and cleaner. The water was very slimey, very green, and very dirty. The brochure claims it is fed by a natural spring, but no evidence of this was to be found. The water looked way too dirty and was way to warm to be spring fed. Also, there was only 3 ft of "swimming" water. They have over 3ft marked off and it says no swimming. The kid section is very poor and very trashy. There was not enough to keep my kids busy at the beach. The boardwalk advertised was really just a deck with old, tacky looking plastic seating on it.

The "kiddieland" that is advertised is really just a very small park, which was overcrowded and is no way big enough for the campground.

We went on karaokee weekend, and they were charging an additional fee for people to do it. Other than this, they had practically nothing for kids to do- and it seemed like all that the adults around us were doing was drinking alcohol. There were people driving around DRUNK in golf carts, being loud, using obscene language. This seemed to be the norm. Be careful walking on the paths- my daughter nearly got run down! We also had issues with drunk people stumbling through our site, and we saw a drunk throwing up on the bridge into the creek that kids play in.

The trains are loud and have to blow the whistles while they are passing by. The trains shake the ground and are loud enough that you cannot hear anything while they are passing- and they pass about every 30 minutes all night long. We rented a cabin and still were unable to sleep through the VERY loud noise. The seasonal people seem to all be drunks and very dirty people as well. I think they would have to be drunks to put up with the constant trains going by shaking the ground and blaring the whistles. Don't count on sleeping if your going to camp here!

This place was advertised as family friendly, but it was quite the opposite. This place is more like a party spot for trashy young people, not for people with children! It is dirty and disgusting and I definately would not make the mistake of staying here again!

White Pines is 2 minutes down the road- would stay there instead- at least it is CLEAN.

Excellent Weekend

Date:

May 27, 2009

Took the family here for Memorial Day Weekend. All of us had a wonderful time. There is plenty to keep the kids busy. With the park, the creek, the sand beach, and all the other kids running around having fun, they were all well run down by bed time. This is a very friendly campground. We were surprised by how welcome we felt with just about everyone we made conversation with. There's a good mix of personalities there. Even though it was Memorial Day weekend, things wound down to a respectable level so we could all get our rest. The live band on Sunday was a lot of fun. Some reviews have commented about train noise, but we personally found it tolerable and not as frequent as it was described. Nothing a glass of Scotch can't cure before bed. (The kids slept well - all four of them - that's the important part) We camped in a motorhome so we did not use the facilities as other may need to. We will certainly be returning, as out of the many different places we've visited over the last year - this is one of my favorites.

Campgrounds from HE!!

Campgrounds from he!!...Lake LaDonna

Well, that about says it all...besides the weather being so unbearably hot...when we got there, Lake LaDonna in Oregon, IL. we got our stuff all out of the cars and started to set up our 3 campsites and one of the girls(12years old) comes back and said how nasty the bathroom and showers were. Well, knowing kids, I went to look for myself. Well, they weren't just nasty they were down right disgusting. So, knowing that the whole weekend was going to be hot, and we would all be using the showers, I went to the camp store and asked if anyone was going to be out to work on the bathroom and the shower room. They were there within 30 minutes to clean everything up. Little did I know at that time that that would be the least of our problems.
About 10 minutes later a BN/Santa Fe train comes roaring thru the campsite, about 300 feet away from the edge of our tents is the tracks for this very active train line. 60-70 mph at least 100 cars or piggy backs, and every 20-30 minutes all night Friday night. We had no idea that the trains were that close or would run that often. The trains not only were fast and allot of them , the whistles or horns, you could hear from miles away, because the crossings are all ungated. They have to blow the horn so many feet before each one, well, Lake LaDonna has a crossing right out in front of the darn place, so...we heard the trains and the whistles all night and all morning. The only break we got from the trains, was Saturday afternoon for about 3 hours.

The lake was ok, smaller than High Tides, less toys in the water than HT, a nice sandy beach, they had a great halloween night for the kids on saturday with a costume contest and free ice cream for all the kids, a DJ for the monster mash dance.

Needless to say,

I AM NOT RECOMMENDING THIS PLACE TO ANYONE...

This place was recommended by someone at High Tides when we were there 3 weeks ago.
