Rude Mgmt Disgusting Restrooms
July 9, 2010
I want to share a terrible experience at Betsie River Campsite. At 10 oclock I suddenly needed to use the restroom. You know how it is, you are eating and sleeping differently while camping and suddenly it hits you. I quickly walk to the restrooms praying I don't have an accident on the way. There is a sign that says "Restroom Closed for Cleaning". I am standing there and a middle aged woman with short blonde hair and a masculine persona tells me the bathrooms are closed. I said it was an emergency. She said it didn't matter, she wasn't going to open the bathrooms just for me. I asked what I should do. She said, "What would you do if you were at Wal-Mart?" That question is wrong on so many levels I won't try to address it. With no other options I went into a stall and used the restroom while this woman shouted profanity at me while I did my business. When I was finished the owner, Wilbert Lavely, prevented me from leaving the restroom and asked me if I could read. I said I had an emergency and he asked me over and over if I could read. I told him to call the police and let's let them resolve this. He said the sign posted there had been there for years and that I should know the restrooms were closed for an hour. I told him it was my first visit. Finally he let me out of the restroom while the woman who I originally dealt with screamed profanity at me. I went to Barbara Lavely in the office to get my refund and leave. She explained that this happenned all the time and the woman who cleans the restroom gets frustrated because she can't get her work done. I told her that there needs to be a place for people to use the restroom at all times at a campsite. She said that they are willing to watch the women's room so that a guy can use it when the restroom is closed. Neither Wilbert or the blonde woman made that offer available to me. I would have gladly taken it. The campground itself is mediocre. Kind of a big grassy and rock-roaded parking lot. A handful of shady looking locals live on the site year round. I would recommend looking at the Platt River campground. Much nicer. Frankfort - the town and beaches are awesome. Just stay away from Betsie River Campsite and you will have a great time.
