Great place to camp!

Date:

November 14, 2012

This campground is huge. We have stayed the 5 times now over the past f years, and I. Ever consider staying anywhere else in Mackinaw City. The sites are varied in size- and the price reflects that. I have stayed on super tiny spots that fit only a table, a car, and my tent.

This past summer, I called late in the season to register for the holiday week, thinking I would likely wind up with a small site. Instead, the staff found me a gorgeous huge site that allowed me to set up 2 tents, a canopy, and I had room to park my car with a lot of room left over for the kids to play.

This campground features a heated pool, and a small beach front on Lake Huron. It has 2 nice playgrounds, basketball courts (you can check balls out at the big camp store), free mini golf, fire truck rides, a small arcade, and bike cart rentals.

The only complaint I have over the past few years, is the campfire situation. Rather than having pre-dug fire pits, you use a fire pan that is about 12" in diameter, and only 3" tall. It is exceedingly hard to start a fire in it, or keep one going. I recommend bringing a fire starter, though I have picked them up in the camp store as well.

Food wise, the campground has a decent selection, but they also have an area for warm foods (fresh donuts! Pizza, breakfast sandwiches, hot dogs, etc- I have only tried the donuts and pizza and both were good), and ice cream treats available.

Overall, this is a nice campground. When you call, make sure you request a large campsite. If you are tent camping, the lakefront locations are smaller, as well as the super saver spots. The bigger spots are away from the lake, I'm the woods. The full hook up trailer sites are super small, but they are also the only bridge view sites in the park. They pack people in like sardines over there.

If you want to go without the hassle of taking a tent, they do offer several different cabins. We have gone that route twice. We rented a regular cabin both times. One was fairly. ER, the other was pretty old. Both slept 5 people, and had a microwave and a mini fridge (all cabins feature this). Only the newer one had a table in the cabin, though. Request one with a table if you can- they provide some much needed storage space, not to mention a place to eat, or play cards if it's rainy outside.

We are currently planning our next vacation (super early, but I just love Mackinaw and can't wait to be back there every year), and we plan to stay in the large cabins with a bathroom. They look like they are all newer, and have more of a kitchen count and cupboard set up, as well as a kitchen sink.

Love This place!

This place has been built by the same family that has operated it for over 50 years, which for us is a big plus. However the big reason camp here is for the spectacular view. They have 1 mile of shoreline viewing Mackinac Bridge and Mackinac Island. Any review that doesn't the incredible view is in my opinion - suspect. The scenery is unmatched and the shoreline is totally accessible to all campers. Lots of roads and trails to bike on, a heated pool, free Wi-Fi, free fire truck and hayrides in the evening, free minigolf, and a free shuttle to the Mackinac Island ferries. They have one of the most complete and pleasant camp stores we have ever seen. They also give you a huge discount on golfing at the (beautiful & sprawling) Mackinaw Club Golf Course - which is also operated by the same family. They have a toll-free 24-hour number to call if you are disturbed by other campers. The facilities are practically spotless and staff which are very accessible are very well-trained, professional and helpful. Their check-in is very speedy and well organized. I saw a previous reviewer that complained about their cancellation policies - all I can say is that the policies were standard for camps where we have stayed and were explained very clearly to us when we reserve our site (we also got a confirmation email that again explained the policy). They have economically priced sites ($11 - $15 a night) which are on the small size (if you are on a budget) but if you have a big rig and one large site and ours was about 40' x 60' - very large. It's a little disconcerting to see people complaining about a small site size when it is completely your choice what size site can pick. I counted on the reservation form that they have over 21 different types of sites available. So if you pick a small/cheap site you should explain that in your review and not insinuate that the whole campground has small sites. Even though the campground is very large, it didn't feel busy. In fact the mood was, dare I say, tranquil! We met several campers here who have been coming back for years-and I have a feeling we will be joining them!

Do not reserve here

I have never left a bad review for something, but after this experience I feel compelled to warn people. The staff is unhelpful and rude. We reserved in person, despite my better judgment, after looking at the sites. I SPECIFICALLY asked the woman at the window if there was a fee for canceling since we were unsure of our dates. She gave me an odd look and said Not if you let us know in advance. There is a $3 non-refundable fee . I went ahead and reserved since $3 is not much risk. I asked her to only charge one night since we weren t sure of our plans and didn t want to give more than the minimum in advance. Well, they charged the whole stay on our credit card. We did, in fact, have to cancel and I gave almost 2 weeks notice. They charged us $13 to cancel and said there is a $10 cancellation fee that they state at the window and in an email confirmation. I was NOT told about the $10 cancellation fee. If I had known it would be $13 to cancel then I would NOT have made the reservation until I was sure of our dates. I ve called back and spoken to 2 rude people, the manager being one of them. The manager insisted that they give this information to everyone and I can assure you I was not told. She also said that it was marked that I was told about the $10, well, it was also marked that I only wanted one night charged and they didn t do that, so several things marked on that sheet are incorrect. The manager wanted me to email my complaint after I ve already called twice and emailed once, and that she would forward it to the owner who would likely do nothing. THIS IS RIDICULOUS and HORRIBLE customer service. I cannot believe that anyone would recommend this place. I didn t even stay here and I can assure you that I will tell EVERYONE going to mackinaw to not fall for this place, who cares that they have a video of their campground, they have horrible customer service.

When the owner saw my terrible review on TripAdvisor he responded by saying I was rude to the staff. That is not true. Please take the time to read the other terrible reviews of this campground and save yourself the time and hassle. His staff did not tell me about the $10 cancellation fee when I was standing there in front of the window about to pay. Their email confirmation says nothing of the $3 non-refundable fee. And the email confirmation came after I made the reservation so it would have been too late to cancel without fee anyway - which is exactly why I asked in-person at the window. Terrible service and you ll notice for any bad review - the owner says something about the person leaving the review - I ve never spoken to the owner and I was not rude to the staff at all. I hope this man is losing more money by getting bad reviews and people going elsewhere rather than honoring good customer service and refunding money when HIS staff failed to give all the information.

We stayed at Mackinaw Mill Creek for the 4th of July holiday, but I will not come back. The sites are extremely small and tight, and the staff is rude and unfriendly. We reserved three sites for a group of 12 and we could not peacefully gather by the campfire at night because every site is so close to each other.

We had to do a doubletake when we got to the park to make sure that the website pictures featured the same place. The site are MUCH too small in the "full hookup" area. I noticed that many campers were not able to have their awnings out, we barely fit with our slide out. The fire pans are a joke. I see their standpoint on making them moveable due to the size of the sites but if you enjoy a nice large fire this is not the place for you. The only real thing this campground has going for it is the view which is beautiful....Otherwise head to the U.P. for some real camping enjoyment!!!!

Always upgrading, family owned and operated.

My family has been staying at Mill Creek Campground for a number of years. It's only a few miles from downtown, but it's far enough away from the hustle and bustle that we can relax there without being in the middle of downtown. Actually they expanded alot of the sites last year, so there are bigger sites for RVs now and they upped the electric, too. It's been really busy on the fourth of July before, but other times we have stayed there when it wasn't a holiday, it wasn't too bad.

The facilities on the main page for this campground isn't complete, they have tent sites, there is a dump station, pets are allowed, there are pull through sites and they have cabins, so I guess that would be lodging.

They always seem to be upgrading stuff, last year they added Wi-Fi coverage, so I was able to get the laptop online. They even remodeled the shower buildings, which are REALLY nice now. We even got free use of the driving range at their new golf course a few miles away. I would reccommend this place anyday. We'll keep going back, the family that owns/runs the place is really nice and that's number one in my book.

Extremely large and busy park.

Date:

November 11, 2005

Nice park but way to busy for my taste. With well over 600 sites, it is to be expected. Great views of the bridge and passing ships. Lots of kids that take over the pool and gameroom. Do less than the posted speed limit and watch for the kids running into the roads. Entertainment on the weekends. The sites near the front of the park are bigger than on the lakefront. The loops right on the lake are very small to where you cannot open your awning and pull puts. The firepits are nothing more than oil changing pans (see picture) and the wood from the camp store would bairly fit. All and all the park is not bad and very nice. Its just to busy of a park for our taste. We will go back for a weekend due to the proximity to Mackinaw City.
