I was a sad summer!! Couldn't get anyone to visit unless it was for free!! The bathrooms never had toilet paper and AL LIES SOOOOO BAD!!!! Abnaki was and could be one of Maine's biggest treasures and great memories for all ages!! But the memories are sooo sad now!! The fireplaces are all falling over and messy full of trash from campers that came at the beginning of the season never to return. Me and three other seasonal's that wanted nothing more then to continue staying have had enough we watched seasonals get kicked out for trying to stick up for themselves ones that left because Al turned there power off and all there frozen meat and freezer stuff thawed all through there camper during the hot months. Very evil man Al can be don't get fooled by the smile because it won't take long for you to see through it!! SAD and everything his mom worked for he is destroying!!

HE'LL GET ON AND TELL YOU EVERYTHING YOU WANNA HEAR BUT THE END RESULT IS NO PROGRESS. HE'LL SAY IT'S CAUSE THERES NO MONEY BUT HE DROVE OFF ALL THE PAYING CUSTOMERS. AND TO HIRE A REGISTERED SEX OFFENDER TO RUN A FAMILY CAMPGROUNG SHAME ON YOU ALBERT, IF YOU DON'T SCARE OFF THE CAMPERS THEN THIS WILL FOR SURE.

I am very disappointed in all the improvements that have been promised year after year and none of them get fulfilled. We are promised of new power, new bathrooms...etc! Nothing noteworthy has been done. If there was ever a way of getting a campground in such a wonderful location getting closed down, just put Al in charge. He has a way of breaking people and thier faith in people break down. My famly has been seasonal through the Rob years as well as the Al years and I have to admit the Rob years were the best. There were activities for the kids as well as the adults and the store was always open. I feel that this will be the last season for us as well as a number of other families that have stuck through, we are just tired of all the empty promises. When you can't fill your campground on the fourth of July, when can you fill it?!?

No longer the wonderful campground of my youth

Date:

August 10, 2011

My family has been camping at Abnaki for the past 36 years. It has a really nice beach.

At this point in time, the place has two things going for it: family tradition and a really nice beach.

Al seems bent on running the place into the ground. Yes, when Robbie was running it, there was a problem with rowdy campers. Robbie is an easy going guy and enforcing the rules just wasn't his thing. This summer, the place has been much tamer (of course the absence of campers may play some role in that). I was however treated to the spectacle of three of Al's workers cussing at each and threatening to get into a fist fight while trying to start a bonfire on the beach. They are a classy bunch.

When Al took over a couple of years ago, he came thru the place like a wrecking ball. Yes there were some people that probably had to go, but Al does not seem to realize that when you piss off that many people, word will get around. The vast majority of campers at Abnaki are families that live within an hours drive of the place and he has left a very sour taste in the mouths of that local camping community. That is a bell that is going to be very hard to unring.

There has been some money invested in the place this summer, but as the basic infrastructure of the place is falling down around Al's ears, he has seen fit to waste money on sealing the blacktop in front of the LogCabin Store, wasting money on a huge wood carving of a black bear that is standing out in front of the store, and building a very nice deck on the front of the store. Oh, by the way, that nice new deck is for employees only. The bathrooms under the A Frame have been given a makeover, but ladies be aware, there is also a ground level window in the women's bathroom that allows anyone walking by to view you while taking care of business on the toilet or in the shower.

Getting back to the Log Cabin Store. The place is very poorly stocked with camping essentials. My cousin was there 4th of July weekend camping in his pop up. He had zero luck getting any ice at the store. Al told him that they make 100 bags of ice every day and it was simply bad luck that they had run out. Makes you wonder were 100 bags of ice goes to in a 95 site campground that isn't even half full and the majority of those sites have big rigs on them with good sized fridges in them.

This place could be an absolute goldmine if the management had better business sense and a clearer understanding of how a hospitality business should be run. It is not a good idea to run off half of your revenue and fritter away money on window dressings while major electrical problems, a lack of clean usable rest rooms, and some drainage issues continue to fester. Judging from the number of empty sites, this place can't afford it.

The saddest part is that my kids (the 3rd generation of Abnaki campers) aren't that in love with the place. I can't really blame them because with the place more than half empty, it can be hard to find kids to play with and there really aren't that many activities for them to do other than go swimming.

As has been the case these last few years, there has been some talk this summer of this being our last year at Abnaki. Habit and family tradition will probably win out for one more year. Oh yeah, lets not forget that really nice beach.

I am a seasonal camper at Abnaki. I am so pleased with everything that has been done the past three years. Al has gone above and beyond to help make the campground a better place for families. We have new bathrooms, a new deck, the sites are cleaner and the store is selling pizza, ice, soda, fried food, and dough boys. I am very sad to think that Thomas Builders are making comments like this.J Thomas tries to run the business and make his own rules and bashes people when he doesn't get his way. This man is an abuser, we have all heard him yelling at this better half. We don't need people like this at Abnaki. He should pull out.

As a long time camper of abnaki I can 't believe what has come of it. once a lively area of much fun is now a empty lot of no fun. No people to speak of and no fun to be had with a staff that is intent on keeping it that way. I asked if playgrounds and bathrooms were in the future and the same old answer- were working on it, when we don't know cause you never see anybody working at all. What a sorry excuse for a staff they cant handle the day to day stuff let alone the crisises that never stop happening.

I have been a camper at Abnaki for a few years now. My family is seasonal there, this is the first year that I have heard so many people complain about the way the place is being run and that prices are crazy and there are a number of seasonals that are planning on this being thier last season. There were many upgrades promised to us in the beginning of the camping season and not one of them has been filled. We as seasonals asked for the bathrooms to be fixed and oh my goodness, there is still no running water in the faucets in them. We asked for a playground area for the kids-because when there is right now is two dangerous swings, a slide, and some thing I don't even know what it is. It is too bad that the new brother(Al) to take over this summer could not stand by his word and start making an effort to make the campers happy, at least Rob kept everyone happy and the campground was full. There has only been one weekend this summer where it was near full and you all guessed it it was the 4th of July. I am just very disappointed that Abnaki is not what we ever remember it being. We miss the old way.

I hope if you read this you take it seriously. I would not reccommend going to this campground. The grounds were not kept up- there was trash everywhere. I like to see people having fun and enjoy having a good time myself but this place is just frightening. Most of the adults were drunk and obnoxious. Fights broke out and there was a lot of yelling. The sites were very close together which compounded the problem. I would never bring a child to this campground because they would have a whole new vocabulary after leaving. The owner was not sympathetic and did nothing to alleviate the situation. If you would like to visit the area I would highly reccommend the Mount Blue State Park. We went there after leaving Abnaki early. It is sad that this campground is run so poorly because it is in a nice area.

An awful experience

To start off, I walked into the bathroom. There were two stalls. One did not have a door, the other had a broken door. After we went to bed our very close neighbors became very loud because they were drinking. This continued for hours. Then at 2:00 in the morning another set of neighbors got very upset and started screaming. Someone threatened to shoot another person. Then one person got in their vehicle and attempted to run another person over. That person got out a mallet and started hitting the truck. All the time there was no help or response from the campground management. They were not appologetic, instead arrogant and rude. This is not a family campground. Instead it is a drink-fest. The owner only cares about money, not the safety and comfort of his guests. Highly unreccommended!!!
